The Most Effective Uses for Light Motion Sensors in Your Home

There are numerous kinds of occupancy sensors or motion activated lights you can utilize in your home. Having these installed in your home helps you save energy, time and money. This simple technology is taken for granted and often is forgotten about when designing or updating a home.

What are PIR Sensors?

A passive infrared sensor senses motion and is used to detect whether someone has moved in or out of the sensor's range. These sensors measure infrared light radiating from objects within its field of view. When used with lighting applications it helps to sense a human or animal entering a room or space so a light automatically turns on. It also detects when there is a lack of motion for a set period of time which then automatically shuts lights off. This feature is energy efficient and helps you to save on your electricity bill by ensuring lights are shut off in rooms or spaces that are not occupied. There are a variety of products you can have in your home that have PIR sensors such as wall switches, ceiling mounted sensors, fixtures, wall mounts and more.

An Occupancy/Vacancy motion sensor PIR wall switch is ideal for commercial or residential applications. The Maxxima PIR sensor switch can function as an automatic on/off switch (occupancy mode) or a manual on/automatic off switch (vacancy mode). In either mode, the lights will turn off after a predetermined period of time in the absence of motion. These switches are perfect for family homes where kids forget to turn lights off in rooms when they exit. This switch allows for you to set an adjustable time delay from 1-30 minutes so when there is no movement in the room the PIR sensor switch will shut off the light after the set period of time. It also can work as an occupancy sensor ensuring light will automatically turn on when you enter.

Ceiling and wall mount PIR sensors are hard-wired motion sensors that can be installed at a certain height on your wall or ceiling to detect motion in a room. These products are versatile and can be used in residential or commercial spaces such as hallways, living rooms, kitchens, closets, hotel rooms, break rooms and more. These motion sensors are designed to replace a standard light or wall switch. The PIR sensor detects changes in the infrared energy given off by occupants as they move within the coverage area. When occupancy is detected by the sensor the lights in the room will switch on. An internal timer will automatically turn off the lights when it is experiencing inactivity of motion. Some of these sensors even feature adjustable sensitivity, time delay, and light level settings so that you can customize it for your application.

Motion sensor ceiling lights also feature PIR sensor technology. This allows for the unit itself to detect motion in a room and automatically turn the light on/off. These lights are often featured in entry ways, hallways, living rooms, apartment buildings and condos. Some of these lights even feature a dusk to dawn photocell sensor which prevents the light fixture from turning on if there is light in the room. This is a great security feature when it’s night time and you would like to have a light on in your home for when you arrive.

PIR sensors are now a crucial part of home design. Adding them to pantries, mud rooms & laundry rooms allow you to easily walk into these rooms with your hands full and have the lights automatically turn on. On the flip side, when your family member rummages through the pantry for food or laundry room for their favorite shirt you don’t have to stress about them leaving the light on all day. These sensors are creating seamless lighting experiences for homeowners while saving them money on their electrical bills. Shop our many motion sensor products to make your life easier.
