Installing and Removing Canless LED Downlights: Full Guide for a Clean, Damage Free Finish

Pinched fingers, cracked drywall, and damaged fixtures are all common results of improper LED downlight installation and removal. LED downlights are a common feature in homes and commercial spaces, yet many homeowners and professionals aren't familiar with the techniques that help prevent costly mistakes.

In this article, we'll explain the two main types of LED downlights before walking through the proper techniques for safely removing and installing a canless LED downlight.

Determining Your LED Downlight Type

Before beginning installation or removal, you'll first want to identify which type of LED downlight is installed in your space. There are two primary types:

    • Can/Retrofit Downlights: Designed to install into an existing recessed housing (can), making them a popular option for replacing traditional recessed light bulbs.

    • Canless Downlights: Self-contained fixtures that install directly into the ceiling without the need for a recessed housing, offering a slimmer profile and simplified installation.

Removing Your Canless LED Downlight

Removing a canless LED downlight is a straightforward process when done correctly. Improper removal can lead to damaged drywall, cracked fixtures, or spring clips snapping back against your fingers. Follow these steps to safely remove your canless LED downlight while helping prevent unnecessary damage.

Step 1: Turn Off the Power

This is the most crucial step of the process. Failure to shut off the power before removal creates a serious risk of electrical shock and serious injury.

Step 2: Locating the Spring Clips

Begin by getting a finger under the trim. If you can't, use a flathead screwdriver to gently work beneath the trim until you can fit a finger underneath.

Slowly pull the fixture down approximately ½ inch until you can trace the edge and locate a clip. There are two spring clips on every downlight, with the second positioned directly across from the first.

Step 3: Release Clip Tension

A common mistake is pulling the fixture straight down without first releasing the spring clip tension. Doing so can damage the ceiling and fixture.

Instead, place your thumb against the ceiling right where the spring clip is located. As you push up, slowly pull the fixture down to help reduce pressure on both the spring clip and the drywall. As you pull down, you'll begin to see the base of the spring clip. Once the clip is almost fully exposed, push it back with your opposite hand to release it from the ceiling.

You now have easy access to the second clip through the ceiling opening. Simply reach in and lift the second spring clip off the drywall.

Step 4: Disconnect the Fixture From the Junction Box

At this point, the downlight should be hanging from the ceiling by the connector cable attached to the junction box. Unscrew the coupling nut and then pull the two connector halves straight apart by gripping the plastic connector bodies and pulling them straight apart.

Installing Your Canless LED Downlight

Once the old fixture has been removed, you're ready to install the new canless LED downlight. Proper installation helps ensure a secure fit, reliable performance, and a clean finished appearance. Follow the steps below for a secure, professional-looking installation.

Step 1: Turn Off the Power

Just like the removal process, be sure to keep the power shut off for maximum safety.

Step 2: Determine Hole Opening Size

This is one of the most important steps in the installation process. A hole that's too large can leave visible gaps around the trim, while a hole that's too small may prevent the fixture from fitting properly. We supply each fixture with a hole cutout template or include the recommended cutout size in the installation manual. Once you've confirmed the ceiling opening matches the recommended cutout size, installation becomes much easier.

Step 3: Wire the Junction Box

Open the junction box and remove the appropriate knockout for your electrical supply cable. Feed the cable through the cable clamp, then connect the ground wire to green, hot wire to black, and neutral wire to white using the included wire nuts. Close the junction box cover once all connections are secure.

Step 4: Connect the Fixture to the Junction Box

With the preparation complete, you can begin installing the new LED downlight. Connect the light fixture to the junction box using the connector cable, then secure the connection with the coupling nut.

Step 5: Installing the Downlight

If your fixture features selectable color temperatures, set the desired CCT using the selector switch before installing the fixture into the ceiling. Once the fixture is installed, changing the color temperature will require removing it from the ceiling.

Fold both spring clips upward while maintaining a secure grip on the fixture.

Apply even pressure around the trim as you guide the fixture into the ceiling until the spring clips securely engage the drywall. Once fully seated, confirm the fixture sits flush against the ceiling.

Once the fixture is securely installed and sits flush against the ceiling, restore power at the breaker and test the downlight to confirm it's operating properly. With your canless LED downlight successfully installed, you can now move on to the next fixture or project

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Even though canless LED downlights are designed for straightforward installation, a few common mistakes can lead to damaged ceilings, poor fixture performance, or unnecessary rework. Keeping the following tips in mind can help ensure a smooth installation and removal process.

Removing the Fixture Without Turning Off the Power

      • Electrical shock risk
      • Always switch off the breaker first

Pulling the Fixture Straight Down

      • Doesn't relieve spring clip tension
      • Can damage drywall, clips, and fingers

Using the Wrong Ceiling Cutout Size

      • Gaps if too large
      • Fixture won't fit if too small

Forcing the Fixture Into the Ceiling

      • Can bend clips
      • Can damage drywall
      • Apply even pressure

Forgetting to Set the CCT Before Installation

      • Must remove fixture to change it later

Pulling on the Wires Instead of the Connector

      • Can damage the wiring
      • Disconnect using the connector body
