More About Recessed Lighting
Recessed lighting is one of the most popular ways to illuminate a space. There are many different styles of recessed lighting, giving you many options to choose from based on the type of building. These downlights, also known as high hats, come in round and square styles as well as sizes ranging from 2 inch to 10 inch. They are also available in different colors including white, black and bronze trim. Whether your recessed lighting plan is for a home, office building, restaurant or other space, there is a downlight that can achieve the lighting and design aesthetic you are looking for. High hats have been used for decades and, while the styles have evolved over time, the basic concept is the same. They provide a sleek and elegant look whether you choose a style with a lens flush to the surface or with the more traditional looking recess.
What is recessed lighting?
A recessed light is installed directly into a ceiling with the body of the fixture and electrical components hidden. This provides a clean look with the appearance of light coming out from the ceiling. The lens of the fixture can be flush with the ceiling or may be recessed behind the ceiling line. Recessed lights are available in a wide variety of shapes, styles and colors, giving you options to customize your design.
How far apart should you install downlights in a room?
A general rule of thumb for spacing your recessed lighting is to divide your ceiling height by two. For example if you have 8 foot ceiling, you should space your downlights approximately 4 feet apart. Depending on the size of your lights and lumen output, you may need to adjust this spacing to achieve your desired brightness level.
